NNSL (NOV 15/96) - Two pregnant women from Gjoa Haven in Yellowknife to have their babies were robbed in the downtown early Wednesday morning.

Police say the women, both nine months pregnant, were walking on 50th Street near the Corner Mart when their money was snatched.

They were about to enter the convenience store when a man took a $100 bill and a $20 bill out of one woman's hand.

Police say the cash was all the money the women owned.

The women tried to chase the robber, but weren't able to catch him. They were, however, able to get a look at their assailant.

He is described as in his 20s with long blond hair and a moustache. He was wearing white pants, a white ball cap and a blue and white jacket.

Neither of the women were injured, but RCMP are calling the crime heartless and despicable.

Sgt. Wylie Grimm says there are muggings a few times a year in Yellowknife, but he doesn't recall any such crime against pregnant women in the past.

They are asking anyone with information to contact them to assist their investigation.
