Richard Olsen, manager of fire operations with the GNWT, said June will be the month to watch during fire season.
Four fires have been reported so far. Two in the South Slave region, one in Inuvik and one in the Yellowknife area. Three of these are already out, while the fourth fire 20 kilometres west of Yellowknife is under control.
Three of the fires are suspected to have been caused by people.

Heritage funding deadline extended
If residents have artistic project ideas related to the history of Yellowknife, the city wants to help fund them.
The heritage committee has extended its deadline for funding applications to June 30. Projects can include photography, social media, mobile apps, public art displays or any other idea residents might have that celebrates the history of the city.
There is no limit to the amount of money provided for each project, but those with a requested dollar amount over $3,000 will need to get council approval.

Homecare services get boost
Yellowknife is getting three additional home support workers as part of the government's efforts to strengthen homecare services in the NWT. Health and Social Services Minister Glen Abernethy made the announcement Monday in the legislative assembly when asked about the GNWT's plans for allocating the $2.5 million for homecare added to the budget in March.
Abernethy did not have a timeline for having the workers in place as he said job descriptions, hiring and training needed to be done first.
