Employment peaks outside Yellowknife

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
The number of people employed in areas outside Yellowknife hit a record high as employment in the capital slid for a third year, according to data collected and released by Statistics Canada and distributed last month by the NWT Bureau of Statistics.

There were 10,600 people employed outside the city last year, setting a record according to the stats bureau's March 27 report.

The bureau noted that employment dropped for the third consecutive year in Yellowknife, with 300 less people employed compared to 2015.

The employment rate was 79.3 per cent in the capital, down 0.4 percentage points from the year before.

The employment rate was 60.6 in the rest of the territory, up 2.5 percentage points.

The report also states indigenous employment hit 56.1 per cent last year, the highest in 10 years.

The rate for non-indigenous people was 81.2 per cent.
