As the March break kicked into full gear, leprechauns and sprites frolicked in the halls of Bompas Elementary School.

Splashed with green and toting bags full of clinking gold coins, children at the school took full advantage of St. Patrick's Day celebrations on March 17, which happened thanks to the Open Doors Society.
Led by Open Doors co-ordinator Cora Fudge and Sylvia Pascua-Matte, students turned their pre-break energy into something productive, industriously crafting tasty green marshmallow squares and green smoothies.
Decked out in holiday finery, students broke into two groups. One group headed off to the kitchen, where they busied themselves measuring out Rice Krispies, and marshmallows and mixing it all together.
Meanwhile, the second group stayed in the Open Doors room, grabbing some ice cream and whipping up milkshakes for everyone.
After the food was finished, everyone met to enjoy it together.
Rhys Dowdeswell, who helped make the squares, said his favourite part of the afternoon was enjoying a milkshake with his friends.
Evan Noseworthy agreed, but said making the squares was also a lot of fun.
"I really liked learning how to cook them," he said.
Fudge said the celebration was one of two the Open Doors Society put on the week before the March spring break hit. On March 16, she said the society ran celebrations with the Busy Bees, a group of three-year-olds.
The children were asked to put on "special glasses" in order to find coins hidden throughout the room.
"It was a last-minute thing, but they were all really into it," she said.
