City loses power
Some went for an hour without heat and power yesterday morning in -37 C weather.
The blackout occurred at about 7:30 a.m. when, according to NT Power Corporation spokesperson Pam Coulter, there was an equipment failure in the Frank's Channel area near Behchoko. People in Behchoko had power restored in five minutes while in Yellowknife it took from 12 to 60 minutes for the lights to come back on.

Yk man charged in Hay River traffic stop
A Yellowknife man faces several charges, including failure to stop for police, dangerous driving and driving while prohibited after a traffic stop in Hay River last Thursday. According to a Hay River RCMP news release, police stopped a driver but as an officer approached the vehicle, the driver drove off at a high rate of speed. Mounties identified the driver before he fled and did not pursue him.
The suspect was located at a Hay River residence later that evening and was arrested without incident. Bruce Richardson, 47, was held in custody and appeared in court in Yellowknife on Monday.

Giant Mine public meeting tomorrow
Citizens are encouraged to attend a Giant Mine Remediation Project public forum tomorrow night at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
It begins at 7 p.m. in the Museum Cafe. The Giant Mine remediation project team will be on hand, including project deputy director Natalie Plato. They will make a presentation and answer questions from the public. The mine closed in 2004 with 237,000 tons of arsenic trioxide buried deep underground.

Canada 150 glow skate tonight
One and all are encouraged to sharpen up the blades and come out for a free glow skate tonight in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday.
It takes place at the Shorty Brown Arena inside the Multiplex, beginning at 6 p.m. The first 150 skaters will receive a Canada 150 glow stick, a news release from the city stated. Skaters are also encouraged to take a photo at the event and tag @ouryellowknife on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram for a chance to win a $25 City of Yellowknife gift certificate.

Hockey night
Baker Lake
The spotlight was on players in the local minor hockey program when the community of Baker Lake held its Hockey Night in Baker Lake on Feb. 18.
A large crowd was on hand at the Baker arena throughout the evening to be entertained by the hockey games being played, and to watch the minor hockey players exhibit their developing skills.

Science time
Chesterfield Inlet
Science-loving students and teachers from across the Kivalliq region will be descending upon Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet this month as the school prepares to host the annual Kivalliq Regional Science Fair from March 9 to 11.
The regional science fair is supported by the Kivalliq Science Educators Community.
Victor Sammurtok School will also be holding its annual Spring Carnival during the Victoria Day long weekend in May.
Polar Bear Plate
Rankin Inlet
A total of nine teams competed in the annual Polar Bear Plate midget-junior 'C' hockey championship in Rankin Inlet this past weekend.
Competing at the event were two teams from the host community, as well as teams from Iqaluit, Arviat, Naujaat, Coral Harbour, Baker Lake, Whale Cove and Chesterfield Inlet.
Final results were not available as of press time.
Midget clash
Arviat
Midget-aged hockey players from across Nunavut will be in Arviat this coming weekend, March 3 to 5, as that community hosts the Nunavut midget hockey territorial championship.
As of press time, at least eight teams were scheduled to compete at the event.
Photo contest
Nunavut
The Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council has announced a photo competition for International Women's Day 2017.
The theme of this year's competition is celebrating women's traditional clothing, as it recognizes the unique clothing worn by women and girls around the world.
The photo competition is looking for images of traditional clothing worn by women, such as the clothing used to celebrate uniqueness, heritage and cultural identity around the world, including amauti, footwear, hats and other headwear, special-event clothing, dance costumes, uniforms and national dress.
The competition is open to all Nunavummiut, and offers a first prize of 1,000.
The photos will be exhibited at the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum in Iqaluit from March 8 to 27.
