Fourth truck fire in four weeks
Fire crews were called to a truck fire Thursday night, the fourth in the Yellowknife area since Feb. 23.
Firefighters were called to Falcon Drive off Deh Cho Boulevard at about 10:45 p.m., according to the city. Crews found the cab of a truck, hitched to a trailer loaded with bags of cement, on fire. It took about an hour to bring the blaze under control. It was the second recent truck fire in a Yellowknife lot after one on Feb. 28 at the RTL compound on Old Airport Road. The other two truck fires were on the Ingraham Trail. No injuries were reported in any of the fires.

Silence at contract negotiations
The Union of Northern Workers and GNWT agreed on at least one thing when they met for three days last week: Keep quiet about the state of negotiations.
The union posted a brief update stating talks had taken place and the sides plan to meet again "in the near future." It was the first time the sides had met since September. UNW represents about 4,000 GNWT employees whose contract expired March 31, 2016.
The GNWT had been publicly posting summaries of proposals after negotiation sessions. No such document has been posted this time.

Mayor passes away
Baker Lake
People in Baker Lake mourned the passing of one of their finest community leaders when Mayor David Aksawnee passed away earlier this month.
Funeral services were held for Aksawnee on the morning of March 7.
During his member's statement, Baker Lake MLA Simeon Mikkungwak announced to Nunavut's Legislative Assembly on Monday, March 6, that Aksawnee had passed away in Baker over the weekend.
Mikkungwak told the assembly that Aksawnee was a well-respected leader in the community, and across the Kivalliq, and held many important responsibilities in his many years of public service.
The Baker MLA referred to Aksawnee as a natural communicator who was as comfortable negotiating with senior mining executives as he was talking with an elder.
For more on Aksawnee, please see the March 22 edition of Kivalliq News.
