Firearm recovered in raid was handgun
RCMP now say that the firearm they recovered in a raid at an unidentified hotel last week was a loaded handgun.
Police executed a search warrant on Jan. 26 at the hotel that they are not naming and seized the weapon along with ammunition. Two suspects were arrested and charged. Anatoly Eichmann, 28, of Alberta and Jamie Haward, 21, from the NWT are charged with unauthorized possession of and careless storage of a firearm. Eichmann was taken into custody and appeared in court this week. Haward is to appear in court on Feb. 14.

App tracks city buses
Want to know where your city bus is located?
Transit users can check where city buses are through live tracking on the city's website and through Ping Street, its mobile app, according to a news release issued Wednesday.
The buses are tracked by GPS which gives the app and site locations of the buses and displays the three bus routes and stops. The location information is updated every 15 seconds.

Mary Brown's opens
Mary Brown's Famous Chicken & Taters opened on Old Airport Road on Wednesday night, to lines around the block.
People waited up to two hours to try the chicken, the line of cars stretching down the road. The restaurant offers a drive-thru as well as seating. The previous Mary Brown's location in Yellowknife closed in 2002. Owner Perry Campbell says he will not run out of chicken, and has adequate product to meet demand.

Bidding on Giant Mine opens
Bidding is now open for the estimated $600 million clean-up contract at Giant Mine.
Companies have until March 16 to apply for the position of construction manager. The Giant Mine Remediation Project will include the long-term containment and management of arsenic trioxide waste, the demolition and removal of all buildings and remediation of surface areas including tailing ponds and contaminated soil, and underground stabilization and water treatment. The contract is expected to be awarded in December.

GNWT praises agriculture initiative
Thanks in part to two agriculture fairs and the hiring of an agriculture co-ordinator, the 2016 gardening season was a hit in the Deh Cho, according to a report developed by the GNWT Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment.
"The agriculture and food-growing successes and accomplishments of each community were recognized through newspaper articles, fall harvest fair, and community feasts. These events were very well attended by the public, recognizing the delivery or our programs while maintaining an excellent working relationship with the leaders and members of each community," states the report.
The report, released this month, takes stock of agricultural initiatives put forth in Fort Liard, Fort Simpson, Jean Marie River, Nahanni Butte, Sambaa K'e and Wrigley under the Growing Forward 2 Program.
Beavertail planning gets underway
The hype for Beavertail Jamboree in Fort Simpson is starting to grow as the Beavertail Jamboree planning committee held its first meeting on Jan. 26.
The committee plans to meet next on Feb. 2 at lunch time at the Metis office. Committee members are looking for new ideas from the community as they nail down the specifics of this year's carnival.
The committee has already announced this year's jamboree will feature Anishinaabe comedian and writer Ryan McMahon, thanks to the Deh Cho Friendship Centre.
Oldtimers' hockey en route
From Feb. 24 to 26, Fort Simpson will play host to the Deh Cho Oldtimers' Hockey Classic.
The tournament, organized by the recreation department, will be for men over the age of 35.
Information campaign gets underway
As part of a Dehcho negotiations information campaign, Liidlii Kue First Nation and the Fort Simpson Metis Nation will be hosting screenings of the film Fighting For Our Land on Jan. 31, Feb. 2, Feb. 8 and Feb. 9.
The times for Jan. 31, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 are 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., while the time for Feb. 8 is 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The screenings will be held in the Liidlii Kue First Nation boardroom.
NWT pays respects
The territory announced it would be lowering all flags on government buildings to half-mast to mark a shooting at a Quebec mosque on Jan. 31.
Six people died in the Jan. 29 incident and 19 were injured.
Registrations open for energy conference
Registrations are open for the 2nd annual Arctic Energy and Emerging Technologies (AEET) Conference and Tradeshow June 12-14. The conference, hosted by the Town of Inuvik, was previously known as the Inuvik Petroleum Show.
One of the guest speakers announced for the show is Dr. Roberta Bondar, globally recognized for her pioneering contribution to space medicine research. She is the world's first neurologist in space, with degrees in agriculture, medicine and research.

Premiers discuss northern policy
The premiers of the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut met in Vancouver last week to discuss northern policy and common pan-territorial priorities, including sustainable development.
"Decisions about the North must be made by Northerners," stated Premier Bob McLeod in a news release.
"We are not content to stand aside and let other governments or countries tell us how and when the North can be developed. We have lived here for generations and have a direct stake in creating a strong and sustainable future according to Northern priorities and values."
Premiers discussed plans for cooperating on a pan-territorial vision for ongoing growth and development. The GNWT will lead the development of a sustainable development strategy.
NWT help line expands
The NWT Help Line now includes telephone group sessions and a Facebook page.
The telephone group sessions will offer NWT residents group counselling support on a variety of topics, including suicide, depression, anxiety, grief, loss, recovery and substance abuse.
Open and closed sessions will be offered, with the closed sessions being part of a two- or three-part series. Open sessions can hold up to 23 individuals while closed sessions hold between three to 10.
The first telephone group session was held earlier this week. The sessions are free, anonymous and confidential.

Basketball this weekend
The sporting season is fully underway as another basketball tournament, this one the 13th annual BDEC regional basketball 5v5 tournament, takes place this weekend at East Three Secondary School.
Categories include adult, 19U boys and girls, 13-15 boys and girls and 10-13 boys and girls.
The tournament takes place Feb. 3 to 4.
