Members of the Tuugaalik High School student council in Naujaat weren't about to let a little nasty weather delay their efforts to raise $1,500 and help their community at the same time.
The group has entered into a partnership with the local Co-op to raise the money.
Student council members began working this past week on collecting enough pop cans within the community to fill a seacan in order to collect the $1,500.
Once the seacan is filled with pop cans, it will be shipped down south during the sealift so the cans can be recycled.
Tuugaalik teachers Lloyd Francis and Jenni Chicarella have been helping the students with their efforts.
Francis said Chicarella has also been helping to run the student council for the past number of years, with help from fellow teacher Ashley Buckle.
He said another aspect of the can collection is the group's desire to help with the environment.
"There is a lot of garbage at the dump right now," said Francis.
"This will help, at least, prevent some garbage from going there, in addition to the student council earning $1,500 in proceeds from the collection, and the pop cans themselves being recycled in the south."
Francis said there are currently about 15 students involved with the student council.
He said 10 of those students helped with the initial can collection on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
"A couple of the students had to leave the drive early because of previous hockey or babysitting commitments.
"We went to every house in the community in about 90 minutes and collected 10 bags full of cans.
"We will be holding one more can collection before Christmas, and there will be a prize for the household that gives the most bags.
"It was a bit cold during our first collection, as a blizzard started to develop while we were out, but the students pushed through."
