Ruth Kaviok of Arviat has been announced as one of this year's short-listed nominees for Samara Canada's Everyday Political Citizens award.
Samara Canada is an organization that does research and advocacy in the area of political engagement each year.
Through its Everyday Political Citizen initiative, it does a nationwide callout to Canadians to nominate an everyday political citizen in their communities to be celebrated, and, hopefully, to encourage others to engage, be it through specifically political volunteering or any kind of community outreach that contributes to our society.
Nominees are then reviewed under three age categories and shortlisted by a panel of judges that include past winners, prominent Canadians and political leaders.
This year's jury includes Rick Mercer, Margaret Atwood, Carmen Aquirre, Cindy Blackstock, Jonathan Kay and Rob Dyer, among others.
Kaviok promotes sustainability in the Artic and spreads awareness of the impact of climate change on Inuit communities.
She promotes a crossculture understanding of environmental issues through experiential learning and storytelling, and by bringing together scientific approaches and traditional Inuit knowledge.
