Birth certificate law passes
MLAs have approved a law amending the Vital Statistics Act to allow use of more than just the Roman alphabet in names on birth certificates and any person to amend their sexual designation without undergoing gender reassignment surgery.
All 16 MLAs present voted in favour of the law Monday and the law is expected to receive royal ascent Friday by the deputy commissioner.
Health and Social Services Minister Glen Abernethy introduced the changes this year after Shene Catholique-Valpy sought to give her daughter a Chipewyan name. Catholique-Valpy is the daughter of Yellowknifer's managing editor, Bruce Valpy.

IserveU looking for feedback
An online voting platform that would allow Yellowknife residents to share their feedback on issues before city council is undergoing a testing a phase.
The creators of IserveU have set up a beta website where users can select motions and cast their votes.
The goal is to get feedback and resolve any problems with the website.

NWT talks tourism
The 2016 NWT Tourism Annual General Meeting and Conference kicked off yesterday.
The event includes a series of workshops and updates for the tourism industry and will be attended by delegates from across the NWT.
The event wraps up with the gala dinner and award ceremony tomorrow, where three tourism excellence prizes will be awarded. Registration for the conference is required.

Det'on Cho Corporation board president arrives
Paul Gruner, the new president and CEO of the Det'on Cho Corporation board starts work on Nov. 7.
He was selected after "an extensive nationwide search" a news release from Det'on Cho stated. He replaces Bob Murphy, who has been on contract with Det'on Cho since May.
Owned by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation membership, the shares of the corporation are held in trust by the chiefs and council who are the Yellowknives Dene Government.

Helping hands
Baker Lake
A group of females of all ages worked to help out the searchandrescue (SAR) workers in their community this past month in Baker Lake.
The group outfitted members of the Qamanituaq Qiniqtiit SAR with new caribou mitts.

Mock election

Many people are probably hoping the results of a mock U.S. election involving 107 students and 12 staff members in Naujaat turns out to be prophetic in nature.
The Naujaat mock election saw Hillary Clinton defeat Donald Trump by a landslide, with Clinton getting 83 votes, Trump 33 and three ballots spoiled.
The Naujaat students are hoping to even their record, after overwhelmingly reelecting Leona Aglukkaq in their mock Canadian federal election.
