DOT pitches airport plan
The Department of Transportation outlined a draft version of a five-year business plan to make the Yellowknife Airport financially self-sustaining at a technical briefing on Tuesday. Proposed changes include an Airport Improvement Fee of $20 per passenger travelling south and $10 for those flying within the territory, and an increase of between $7 and $9 to existing fees charged to airlines, amounting to around $10 million annually to be collected in a revolving fund. Currently, taxpayers subsidize the airport by $4 million a year. The plan will be presented at the legislative assembly next week.
