Hydrant flushing underway
The City of Yellowknife has begun its annual fire hydrant flushing program in the area of School Draw Avenue, according to a notice on its website.
The work began yesterday and is expected to run eight hours per day starting at 7 a.m. Monday to Friday for four weeks throughout the water distribution system.
The city warned that residents may experience dirty or cloudy water periodically as hydrants are flushed.
It recommended running the tap for a few minutes until the water clears.

Premier's Awards announced
The annual Premier's Awards recognizing NWT public servants are scheduled to be held today in Yellowknife.
The ceremony presents awards to public servants who have made outstanding contributions over the past year. Premier Bob McLeod will present The Premier's Awards for Excellence and Collaboration, the Dave Ramsden Career Excellence Award and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada Commissioner's Award for Excellence in Public Administration will be presented.

Thaidene Nene park meeting today
A consultation meeting hosted by Parks Canada on the proposed Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve on the East Arm of Great Slave Lake is scheduled to take place today.
The plan would see 33,690 square-kilometres of withdrawn land would be divided into a 14,000-square-kilometre national park reserve, a territorial park and a protected caribou range, while less than 8,000 square-kilometres with mineral potential will return to being Crown land. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Baker Centre.

Geologists hold Yk geology tour
NWT geologists are scheduled to guide an interactive walking tour today at 12 p.m.
During the tour, geologists will explain the history of geological formations and rocks found within the Yellowknife city core.
The event is part of NWT Mining Week celebrations.
It is free and open to the public.

Mine rescue team competes
Yellowknife/Baker Lake
The minerescue team from the Meadowbank Gold Mine near Baker Lake took part in the 59th annual Mine Rescue Competition in Yellowknife, the NWT, this past weekend.
Mines from Nunavut and the NWT competed for both the Overall Surface and Overall Underground trophies.
Mine rescue teams competing at this year's event were from the Diavik Diamond Mine, Ekati Diamond Mine, Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine, Hope Bay Gold Mine and the Meadowbank Gold Mine (Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd.).
Skill competitions at the event included written test, firefighting, surface practical bench, underground bench, underground obstacle, smoke (surface and underground), rope rescue, first aid and surface rescue.
The judging in each event included everything from safetyequipment checks to simulated disasters.
Final results of the competition were unknown at press time.
