Former Pond Inlet nurse Florence Wood, who retired earlier this year, was recognized by Health Canada in its 2016 Awards of Excellence in Nursing.
She was part of a prestigious group of three to receive the annual award. All winners are front-line nurses who have shown their commitment to excellence in nursing practice through sound judgment, professionalism, leadership and valuing diversity, a Health Canada news release states.
"This year's recipients of Health Canada's Awards of Excellence in Nursing have demonstrated their exceptional leadership, commitment and passion," stated federal Health Minister Jane Philpott.
"I am proud to recognize Florence Wood, Joyce Ball and Sandra Chapman for their contributions to the health and well-being of their communities."
Wood received her nursing diploma from the Prince Edward Island School of Nursing in 1977. She worked as a community health nurse in Pond Inlet and later as health programs supervisor after working in labour, delivery and critical care at various hospitals.
According to a biography from Health Canada, Wood was instrumental in the implementation of many health-related programs, such as the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program, school breakfast programs and more.
