Power knocked out in city
A power outage affecting Yellowknife began at about 5:20 p.m. yesterday evening and lasted about 30 minutes, although the cause was not immediately clear at press time. Northwest Territories Power Corporation tweeted at 5:58 p.m. that power was being restored in parts of the city after previously stating the cause was under investigation. Earlier in the day, the power corp. warned on Facebook that high winds could cause outages.

Dettah ice road closed
The territorial Department of Transportation stated Monday on Twitter the 6.5 kilometre ice road linking Dettah and the city closed.
"Due to the extremely warm weather today, Dettah ice road closed for the season at 10 p.m.," the department tweeted Monday. Earlier it warned conditions were rapidly deteriorating. The warning came as temperatures rose to 12.5 C on Monday afternoon at the airport, according to Environment Canada. The average closing date for the road is April 21, according to the department.

Mildred Hall wins big
Mildred Hall School received $25,000 in new technology from Staples Canada during a surprise assembly held at the school on Monday. Students learned they were among 10 schools across Canada recognized for its ecology programs in the sixth annual Superpower Your School contest. Mildred Hall was recognized for programs including its community gardens, cellphone-recycling drive and using LED lamps in the classrooms. It was also honoured for its annual community clean-up where the school adopts a neighbourhood and beautifies it.

Ramsay joins mining company board
Former minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay is joining the Fortune Minerals Ltd. board of directors, the company announced in a news release Monday. Ramsay was defeated in the fall territorial election. The company plans to develop a gold-cobalt-bismuth-copper mine about 50 kilometres north of Whati, which is projected to last 21 years once in operation. Cobalt is used to make lithium-ion batteries which power electronics and electric vehicles.

Singer receives lifetime award
Arviat
Kivalliq's own Arctic Rose, Susan Aglukark, originally from Arviat, was named as the recipient of the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for lifetime achievement this past week in Ottawa. Aglukark, 49, is Canada's first Juno Awardwinning Inuk singer and songwriter.
She will receive the country's highest performing arts honour this coming June.
Aglukark sprang into action to raise awareness of the high suicide rates among aboriginal youths this past year by launching the #ArcticRoseWarCry socialmedia campaign.
Athletes get recognition
Coral Harbour
Parents and Sakku School students from kindergarten to Grade 12 took part in a hockey game against each other in recognition of community athletes in Coral Harbour this past week.
The ice warriors then got together for snacks at the community hall as part of the event to appreciate the athletes of the community. For the complete story on Coral celebrating its athletes, please see the April 27 edition of Kivalliq News.
Contest keeps Inuktitut alive
Whale Cove
Students at Inuglak School in Whale Cove facedoff in an Inuktitut contest this past week.
The event also featured a number of exhibits in the school gym.
The contest was applauded by adult residents of the community, who worry the youth are speaking too much English and not paying enough attention to the Inuktitut language.
Tootoo signs deal with Calm Air

Calm Air announced it has signed New Jersey Devils forward Jordin Tootoo, originally from Rankin Inlet, to a twoyear spokesperson contract, effective this month. Tootoo will represent Calm Air at various functions during his off season.
Calm Air stated in a press release that the airline and Tootoo are committed to promoting culture and arts, sports and recreation, health and wellness, and youth and education, as well as supporting multiple communitybased events.
Artist's work on phone directory
Rankin Inlet
Rankin Inlet artist Dyan White has been selected as the winner of the 2016-2017 Northwestel Directory Cover Art Competition for Nunavut.
Her painting, Inukshuk at Sunset, will be featured on the cover of Northwestel's phone directory and distributed throughout the territory. The painting was inspired by a beautiful summer night, and White's personal connection to a Rankin Inlet landmark.
Northwestel has invited Northern artists to submit their work for a chance to appear on the covers of its regional phone directories since 1995. This year's winning Nunavut artist was selected by a committee of Northwestel employees in consultation with Rowena House, executive director of the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association in Iqaluit.
