A 22-year-old man accused of murdering a man and seriously injuring another has been reading a copy of the Crown prosecution's case against him, according to his lawyer Jay Bran.
Denecho King, who faces murder and attempted murder charges in connection with a bloody early morning attack on John Wifladt and Colin Digness at Sunridge Place apartments on Dec. 14, 2014, was provided with the Crown's disclosure at the North Slave Correctional Centre where he been held since his arrest on an unrelated charge in February 2015.
Wifladt died a few hours after being found in the apartment bleeding and unconscious. Digness, in whose apartment the attack occurred, survived but suffered a serious eye injury.
"It is quite a large volume that will take him some time to go through before we proceed," Bran told court Tuesday.
Territorial court judge Garth Malakoe scheduled King to appear by video from the jail on May 10.
Judge turfs noisy prisoner
A man accused of threatening a deputy warden at North Slave Correctional Centre after flying into a rage was tossed out of court Tuesday after repeatedly interrupting the judge, the prosecutor and his own lawyer.
Lloyd Thrasher, 28, is charged with assault and two counts of uttering threats stemming from a Jan. 25 incident at the North Slave Correctional Centre. He also faces numerous other charges for break-ins and breaching court conditions dating back to 2012.
Territorial court judge Garth Malakoe dismissed Thrasher from the room after he continued to talk over other people in the room, insisting he had been told he would be getting a bail hearing date that day.
"We're done, please leave," said Malakoe, before a pair of court sheriffs arrived at the prisoner's booth and escorted Thrasher away. He has been is custody for the most part since his arrest for the 2012 charges last October. He was briefly released four days after the incident on Jan. 25 but re-arrested the day after Yellowknifer published a story detailing the alleged threat on Feb. 3.
Malakoe was in the process of scheduling a return date for Thrasher on June 29 before Tuesday's outburst.
Lanky Court suspect reviewing new disclosure
Kevin Mantla, the 36-year-old man charged with first-degree murder after an attack at Lanky Court on Sept. 28, 2015, which left one man dead and a woman badly injured, is reviewing new details of the Crown prosecution's case against him, according to his lawyer Jay Bran.
Bran said he has recently been assigned to the file - taking over from Peter Harte in February - and needs more time to go over the new details.
"The Crown advised me there's a new set of material waiting for me at the Crown's office and that has to be reviewed," Bran told court Tuesday.
Territorial court judge Garth Malakoe scheduled Mantla to appear by video from the North Slave Correctional Centre on May 10.
