Candidates have their say over two days
A territorial election forum focused on aboriginal concerns will be held Wednesday and Thursday at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre from 6 to 9 p.m. The discussion will be split over two evenings based on district with all 22 candidates participating. The format will include a question and answer session with pre-selected topics drawn at random. This will be followed by questions from the audience and submitted via social media.

Protect yourself against the flu
A number of free walk-in flu shot clinics will be held this week at Northern United Place. Those most at risk are encouraged to get vaccinated to prevent influenza-related complications. The most vulnerable groups include children under five, pregnant women, adults over 65 and those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or cancer. Anyone who spends a lot of time with those at risk should also consider getting the shot.
Clinics will be open today, Thursday and Friday between 1 and 6 p.m.

Christmas hamper applications open, volunteers needed
The Yellowknife Salvation Army is now accepting applications for its Christmas hamper program. Those who wish to apply need to provide proof of address and income, along with the health card numbers for everyone in the household.
Applications can be dropped off at the resource centre on Franklin Avenue, Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and noon. The deadline is Dec. 11, with hampers available for pick up Dec. 14 and 18.
The organization is also looking for volunteers for its Christmas kettle campaign.

NWT Benefit Auction coming up
Yellowknifers can once again look forward to the annual NWT Disabilities Council Benefit Auction set to be held Nov. 20 at the Yellowknife Inn.
Liam Cameron, office manager at the disabilities council, said the event will feature a silent auction, musical performance by Jim Taylor, a 50/50 draw and a Santa-hat draw.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bidding on items will begin. The evening will last until 10:30 p.m.

Kivalliq repeats cadets victory
Rankin Inlet
A Kivalliq cadet corps captured the Northern Cadet Challenge at Shilo, Man., for the second straight year this past month.
The 3019 Rankin Inlet Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps captured this year's championship in Shilo this past month, while the 3055 Naujaat Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps took home the 2014 challenge .

MLA censured
Rankin Inlet/Nunavut
Rankin Inlet NorthChesterfield Inlet MLA and former Nunavut Community and Government Services (C&GS) minister Tom Sammurtok was censured by his fellow MLAs in Iqaluit this past month.
The vote to censure (formally reprimanding a member of the legislature for his or her actions) Sammurtok was unanimous.
Sammurtok was charged with drunk driving following a minor accident in Iqaluit on April 13, 2015.
Sammurtok had left the Frobisher Inn shortly before the mishap. A breathalyser test revealed his blood alcohol level to be 0.19, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.
The former C&GS minister was stripped of his portfolio on April 14 and resigned from cabinet the following month.
He was found guilty of the charge in June, fined $1,500 and had his driver's licence revoked for one year.
Best costumes chosen
Rankin Inlet
A special contest was held for the best Halloween costume at the Rankin Inlet community hall this past Saturday.
Prizes of $150 (first), $100 (second) and $50 (third) were given out in the categories of five and under, 12 and under, 15 and under, 16 and older and 55 and older.
Church conference, library reopens
Baker Lake
The Glad Tidings Church Conference is scheduled to run in Baker Lake this week on Nov. 4 and 5.
Participants from numerous communities around Nunavut are expected to attend the gathering.
In other Baker lake news, the Thomas Tapatai Community Library has reopened.
The library is open on Monday to Friday from 4 until 8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 1 until 5 p.m.
Winter clothes drive coming up
Rankin Inlet
Students at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) in Rankin Inlet are collecting used clothing items still in good condition to be distributed to children in need in the community.
This marks the second year the MUI students have held the winter clothes drive. Clothing items may be dropped off in the collection boxes placed inside MUI.
Municipal elections on the way

Kivalliq residents are reminded the date of this year's municipal elections are Dec. 14. The Kivalliq Inuit Association elections will be held on the same day.
In Rankin Inlet, the mayor's position and five council seats are up for grabs.
Youth abroad approaching

Kivalliq youth are reminded the deadline to apply to the Canadian phase of the Northern Youth Abroad program is quickly approaching.
The final day to apply for this year's program is Nov. 10.
The program is open to youths aged 15 to 20. Youths do not have to be attending school to participate in the program. Any youth living in Nunavut is eligible to apply.
