Bobby Zoe trial to continue in February

The trial of repeat sex offender Bobby Zoe is expected to continue Feb. 22.

Zoe is accused of entering a home and sexually assaulting a woman in a downtown apartment building on Feb. 15 of this year.

His trial began Nov. 4 and had been expected to be completed at the end of that week but it didn't.

It is estimated the remainder of the case will take three days.

Zoe remains in custody.

Sentencing put on hold

The sentencing of Wayne Guy, who entered guilty pleas to three charges of violating the territorial Tourism Act by offering boat tours in August, has been put on hold as his lawyer decides whether to withdraw the pleas.

Lawyer Jay Bran told territorial court Chief Judge Christine Gagnon that since Guy hired him, he's examined the case and believes there are "issues" with the file that could provide defences.

The case will return to court Dec. 15.

Burn diseased potatoes, city says

The City of Yellowknife told residents with potato crops infected with bacterial ring rot to burn the plants and potatoes, not compost them.

The disease can be identified by a brown or black ring in the potato that's often accompanied by a creamy ooze and hollow spaces.

Residents can contact the city's solid waste facility for methods of disposal.

YWCA receives survey results

The YWCA Yellowknife released the results of questionnaire they conducted with MLA candidates on women's issues. Questionsrelated to women's rights and gender equality issues in the NWT. A news release stated of the 60 candidates, 24 answered the questions, with 14 being from the Yellowknife area.

Qavik hosts curling event

Rankin Inlet

The Qavik Curling Club will be hosting a RBC Sports Day in Canada event in Rankin Inlet on Saturday, Nov. 21.

The event will be held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the local curling arena.

Qavik club members are inviting all Rankin community members to stop by the rink, try throwing a stone and enjoy some refreshments of hot chocolate or coffee.

Hockey signings for new season

Arviat

Sign-up registrations for the upcoming hockey season began in Arviat this past week on Friday, Nov. 13.

The registration fees in Arviat for the 201516 season are $50 for minorhockeyaged players and $100 for senior players.

The Arviat Minor Hockey Association is looking to increase its numbers this year and build on the success it enjoyed during the 201415 season.

Healthy program launched

Kivalliq/Nunavut

The North West Co. Has announced the launch of the Healthy Horizons Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at funding programs to promote the well-being of youth through education, nutrition and active lifestyles.

The announcement was made this past week.

The Healthy Horizons Foundation is slated to operate within communities served by The Northern and North Mart stores.

The North West Co. will fund 100 per cent of the foundation's administration and fundraising costs, so that 100 per cent of every dollar raised is directly reinvested into community programming.

To be eligible for funding from the Healthy Horizons Foundation, a community or organization must be either a registered charity in Canada, or otherwise registered as a qualified donee, as defined in the Canadian Income Tax Act.

The North West Co. and Healthy Horizons have committed to assisting communities and organizations who currently do not qualify with the application process to become a qualified donee.

Rankin Inlet

The Rankin Wolves will be hosting a 12-andunder boys and girls futsal tournament at the Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik gymnasium in Rankin Inlet from Nov. 20 to 23.

All players must have been born between 2003 and 2006 to participate.

Final deadline for registration is Wednesday, Nov. 18. The teams will be selected by Thursday, Nov. 19.
