Alleged arsonist opts for judge and jury

Twenty-two-year-old Steven Tsetta, also known as Steven Bowles, appeared in Territorial Court on Tuesday where he faces one count of arson in the case of a fire on Aug. 18 that destroyed a vehicle and damaged a home on Otto Drive.

Tsetta has elected for a trial by judge and jury in NWT Supreme Court. He will return to court Oct. 20 to set a date for a preliminary inquiry.

Free transit on election day

Getting to and from polling stations during the upcoming municipal election will be made easier for voters - especially those without cars - thanks to a City of Yellowknife initiative being introduced this year.

On Oct. 19, all citizens can use public transportation (including Yellowknife Accessible Transit) free of charge. The idea of offering free transit on election day came as a suggestion from a local resident. Buses will maintain their normal routes and schedules as any other day.

Northern Families CEO running in Range Lake

Caroline Cochrane-Johnson, the CEO for the Centre for Northern Families announced on Tuesday that she will be running as an MLA candidate in Range Lake.

The position is currently held by Daryl Dolynny who has announced he is running for re-election. Cochrane-Johnson said she wants to ensure there is a female presence and wants to bring issues to the table including cost of living, taking care of the environment and seeing that there are proper services for mental health, seniors and the homeless.

NWT question answered on Jeopardy

The Government of the Northwest Territories received an unexpected shout-out on the U.S.-based TV game show Jeopardy on Monday night.

In a category covering questions about the North, contestants were asked if they knew which Canadian government had the Internet address of www.gov.nt.ca.

One of the contestants correctly answered "the Northwest Territories." Jeopardy host Alex Trebek is Canadian, originally from Sudbury, Ont.

Community gets clean-up

Naujaat

Students at Tusarvik School took to the community streets loaded with garbage bags to spruce up the neighbourhood this past month in Naujaat.

The Tusarvik students take part in both the local community cleanup and the Great Canadian Shore Cleanup annually.

Couple returns from medical

Rankin Inlet

Uviluq Naukatsik and her fiance, John Paul Ayaruak, returned to Rankin Inlet this past week after spending more than a year in Ottawa while Naukatsik waited for a heart transplant.

She received the transplant this past March.

Ayaruak stayed by his fiance's side for the entire duration of her ordeal.

The couple were reunited with their three children upon their return to Rankin.

Wickfest goal met

Members of the girl's hockey team who will be travelling to Calgary to participate in Hayley Wickenheiser's World Female Hockey Festival (Wickfest) have raised the $55,000 needed to make the trip.

    Mini soccer tournament

    Rankin Inlet

    The Rankin Wolves will be hosting an Under-12 World Cup soccer tournament at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) this coming weekend from Oct. 16 to 18.

    The tournament is open to both boys and girls who were born between 2003 to 2005.

    There is a $20 Nunavut Soccer Association affiliation fee to register for the event.

    The deadline to register is today, Oct. 14.

    Players or their parents or guardians may contact MUI or Paul Stroeder to register.

    The players will be randomly selected to comprise the teams of the various countries in the World Cup event.
