Thom Jarvis says he's a new property owner concerned about the cost of living in the North. He said property taxes are to blame.

  • Age: 53
  • Marital Status: married
  • Time in Yellowknife: 20 years on and off
  • Occupation: loans manager
  • Experience relevant to job: experience with business and economic development across the territory

"Property taxes are a fairly big factor in that," he said. "Over the last number of years some of the councils have veered off into things I don't think are core city responsibilities."

Jarvis said essential services, such as water, sewage, garbage disposal and road maintenance are what council should be focused on.

"Veering off into Geothermal projects I don't see as core city responsibility," he said.

Jarvis said a decision on what to do with the 50/50 lot, and whether to submit a bid for the 2023 Canada Winter Games will be key issues during the campaign. He said he feels the city simply should not submit a bid for the Games and he doesn't support the tabled plan to put an outdoor plaza at the 50/50 lot. "$6.5 million to create a little park doesn't seem like a good use of money," he said. "As well, the Games, I'm in agreement with the Chamber of Commerce. I don't think we have the capacity."

Jarvis said if he's elected he'll work to have funds for the 50/50 lot redirected, and wouldn't support a bid for the Games.
