Community reaps bounty
Naujaat
Folks in Naujaat were all smiles after a bowhead whale landed in the waters near their community earlier this month.
As is Inuit custom, the whale was brought to shore, sliced up and the bounty shared with all in the community who asked.

Fashion designer wins award
Rankin Inlet/Iqaluit
Victoria Kakuktinniq was on the top of the fashion world after finding out she had been named the winner of the Nunavut Trade Show's Business of the Year Award for 2015 in Iqaluit this past week.
Victoria's mother, Goretti, of the Nunavut Development Corp. was at the trade show and able to celebrate the acknowledgement with her daughter.
Victoria, who designs and creates her own traditional Inuit attire with a modern flair, moved to Iqaluit from Rankin Inlet to further her business efforts a few years ago.

Separate accidents send two to hospital
Baker Lake
A 61yearold man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while out walking in Baker Lake this past week.
The RCMP responded to the accident call at about 9:40 a.m. on Sept. 23.
The man was transported to the local health centre where he was found to be in critical condition.
He was then transported to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre where, as of press time, he was still listed as being in critical condition.
About 12 hours after the first accident, RCMP responded to another call involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at around 9 p.m.
The RCMP arrived to find an ATV had struck a 13yearold. The teenaged pedestrian was taken to the local health centre and then medevaced to Winnipeg with non lifethreatening injuries.
The RCMP is continuing its investigations into the two accidents.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in either of the incidents.
Regional gatherings
Arviat/Rankin Inlet
Arviat was the host of a pair of regional meetings in the Kivalliq this past week.
The community of Arviat hosted the annual Kivalliq Mayor's Meeting early in the week, before the scene shifted to Rankin Inlet.
The roundtable discussions between Kivalliq community-and-government leaders and community and government representatives of Manitoba were held at the Siniktarvik Hotel in Rankin due to infrastructure concerns.
The roundtable was officially hosted by Arviat, however, and chaired by Arviat North - Whale Cove MLA and Government of Nunavut Housing Corp. Minister George Kuksuk.
