The vehicle was stopped at about 7:30 a.m. outside the city on Highway 3 in what police described as a "targeted" vehicle stop, according to an RCMP news release. It's unclear what led police to target that vehicle.
"Stopping that vehicle was not random," said Sturko, adding it was stopped with the intent to arrest those inside.
Two people were arrested and a search of the vehicle yielded the crack cocaine, police say.
Tanner Wade Perkes, 19, from Alberta and Scott Bimson, 47, of Yellowknife have been charged with trafficking cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Perkes also faces a charge of breaching court conditions. The younger man was held in custody while Bimson is eligible for release if he posts a cash bail.
Sgt. Dean Riou with the RCMP's federal investigations unit called the seizure of the crack cocaine a victory for police and the community.
"This short-term investigation led to the seizure of these drugs before they reached the streets of Yellowknife.
"That's a win for the entire community," Riou stated in the news release.
