Accused killer in court

A man charged with murder in the death of a Yellowknife man last December made a brief court appearance yesterday.

Denecho King, 22, appeared via video from the North Slave Correctional Centre.

He was charged May 1 in the murder of John Wifladt, 39, and the attempted murder of Colin Digness in Digness' Sunridge Place apartment on Dec. 14. King was arrested while in jail on a charge of mugging a cabbie in Old Town earlier this year.

Pot allegedly smuggled into jail

A man and woman are facing drug charges after RCMP foiled an alleged attempt to smuggle marijuana into the North Slave Correctional Centre.

In a news release, the Mounties stated that they responded to a report of suspicious activity at the jail last Wednesday during a visit by a woman to a male inmate. Police found a small amount of pot on the inmate and the woman, they stated. Charges of possession and possession for the purpose of trafficking are pending. No names have been released.

Keep boiling water

A boil water advisory continues for the city, Dettah and Ndilo due to high turbidity levels in the drinking water.

Water used for cooking, preparing food, brushing teeth and drinking should be boiled for at least one minute prior to use, chief public health officer Andre Corriveau stated in a press release.

The advisory began May 11.

When the advisory is lifted, it will be announced on the city's website, social media channels and the Department of Health and Social Services website.

Gas prices jump back up

The price to fill up a gas tank is on the rise.

The price of regular gasoline at stations at the Yellowknife Co-op increased recently from $1.089 per litre to $1.239 recently.

The price for regular largely held steady in the city at $1.389 since 2011 before dropping last fall. It went as low as $1.039 in February.

The trend follows an increase in the price of crude oil since last year.

Gone fishin'

Kivalliq

At least four fishing derbies were scheduled to be held during the May holiday weekend.

Rankin Inlet was hosting its annual cod and trout derby, while Arviat was hosting its annual trout and pike derby.

The communities of Whale Cove and Chesterfield Inlet were also scheduled to host their derbies this past weekend. Measuring had not been conducted to declare the winners in any of the four derbies as of press time.

Fuel spill

Rankin Inlet

A fuel spill was reported in Rankin Inlet at about 7 p.m. on May 12 in the vicinity of 2212 Tariuq St.

There were several barriers and berms placed in the area and residents reported a strong odour of P50 home fuel.

Rankin's fire department, hamlet and housing staff handled the immediate response to the situation.

As of press time, the Government of Nunavut and the Department of Fisheries continued to assess the situation and the total volume of fuel spilled was not known.

It is possible some fuel may have found its way into Johnson's Cove.
