Colin Makpah was found guilty of manslaughter last week for the 2010 Rankin Inlet stabbing death of Donald James Gamble.
Justice Neil Sharkey handed down the verdict in the Nunavut Court of Justice April 21.
Makpah, who has been out on bail, admitted to stabbing Gamble with a seven-inch filleting knife during a fight with Gamble.
He had pleaded not guilty and said the stabbing was done in self defence.
Gamble was stabbed several times following an altercation that began at a party.
He was immediately transported to the Kivalliq Regional Health Centre, where he succumbed to his wounds while health centre staff tried to stabilize him.
Makpah, who was 26 at the time of the stabbing, will remain out on bail until sentencing. The date of Makpah's sentencing has yet to be set.
