Thirteen honoured in Kugluktuk
Young volunteers are role models, says Nunavut commissioner

Thirteen Kugluktukmiut received Commissioner's Awards for bravery, volunteer and community service and youth achievement during a ceremony April 8.

Commissioner Edna Elias presented the awards, with Premier Peter Taptuna present for the honours.
Helena Bolt received a youth recognition award for following in her late mother's footsteps by teaching square dancing within the community.
"It is very good to see youth being honoured," said Elias. "Volunteerism needs to start at a young age. They, in turn, become and are role models."
Wayne Magaknak and Calvin Pederson received awards for bravery. The pair helped pull canoeists ashore after they fell in the river in August 2012.
AJ Pigalak received a volunteer and community award for sharing his special skills and taking leadership to promote healthy living through dance.
The Boys Downstairs, a young musical group made up of Gustin Adjun, Shawn Kuliktana, Dettrick Hala, Kevin Klengenberg and Scotty Tologanak received the same award for performing music voluntarily for community events and festivities.
Volunteer and community awards also went to Maria and Attila Csaba for their dedication to the students of Kugluktuk High School through coaching sports and promoting extracurricular activities and Paul Williams for his hard work for the well-being of the people.
The late Nowyah Williams was also recognized and honoured for her valuable work and contribution to the people of Rankin Inlet. Her husband Paul Williams received the posthumous award for her.
