Life-saving actions by Nunavummiut were recognized in the highest order in Cambridge Bay last month.
Doris Angohiatok, Trisha Ogina, Julia Ogina and Jimmy Okhina Jr. were honoured for bravery by Nunavut Commissioner Edna Elias March 20.
Angohiatok, Trisha Ogina and Julia Ogina were recognized for their continuous efforts to save a life by administering CPR. They saved the life of William Palvialok, who had stopped breathing at a camp outside of Cambridge Bay.
"One never knows when first aid and CPR skills may be needed and put into quick use. In the case of these three ladies, they worked together to resuscitate a life," said Elias.
Jimmy Okhina Jr. was recognized for his immediate and courageous actions to rescue then seven-year Ashley Evalik from drowning on July 8, 2011.
The water levels of the river were unusually high and Evalik fell in and was swept away. Without hesitation, Okhina jumped into the river and brought her back to shore.
Awards for bravery are bestowed to Nunavummiut who risk their lives in saving or attempting to save the lives of other people, or who sacrifice their safety for others.
