ITI to talk mushrooms at community meeting
Games committee approved
City council voted unanimously in favour of the 20-plus member committee to decide on the feasibility of hosting the 2023 Canada Winter Games.
The committee will include six representatives from the business community, plus representatives of city council and administration, representatives from the tourism sector, school boards, First Nations and the GNWT.
Council is expected to make a decision on whether or not to submit a bid this fall. It couldn't be determined by press time when the first public meeting is set to take place.

Fire department seeks more fighters
The Yellowknife Fire Division worked with Artless Collective to put together a promotional video promoting the department.
The four-minute mini-documentary shows interviews with firefighters and the work they do.
Emergency fire and medical response, as well as hazmat response and rescue are among the services the division provides for the city and surrounding areas.

New bylaw officers for city
The municipal enforcement division has two new bylaw officers after all councillors voted in favour of the appointments on Monday, with the exception of Coun. Niels Konge.
In November, Konge made a motion to have the Municipal Enforcement division report back to council on its activities and this has yet to happen.
The parking enforcement officer will be taken over by Sean Couvrette. Ricky Lee Sutherland was also appointed to constable.

City getting ready for construction season
The city is getting the jump on this year's construction season by hosting the first of several building permit information sessions on Thursday night at city hall.
Topics include the application process, types of permits as well as building bylaws and standards. In a news release, the city states that other sessions will be held the second and last Thursday of the month through April. The sessions take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the lower boardroom.

Playoffs begin
Rankin Inlet
Eskimo Point Lumber Supply stunned first place M&T by a score of 3-1 in the opening game of their best-of-five playoff series in the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League this past week.
The second semifinal series sees second place Kativik taking on A&K.
The two semifinal winners will square off in a best-of-five championship series.
Man faces charges
Arviat
An Arviat man is facing nine charges after an incident in that community on Jan. 27.
Officers of the Arviat detachment of the RCMP responded to a complaint of a female being forcibly removed from her home, after being assaulted in front of her mother in the early morning hours.
Following an investigation, an adult male was charged with three counts of assault, three counts of uttering threats, one count of break and enter, one count of being unlawfully in a dwelling and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
The male was later released under several conditions, including no contact with the victim or her mother.
As of press time, the RCMP were refusing to release the name of the man charged with the crimes.
Found safe
Arviat/Whale Cove
Two men reported missing while trying to snowmobile to Whale Cove from Arviat have been found safe and sound.
Harry Kuksuk, 37, and Johnny Kaviok, 41, left Arviat on Feb. 2, and were reported missing on Feb. 4, when a local ground search and rescue effort began.
The men were spotted by searchers in a CC-130 Hercules aircraft Wednesday night.
The two men were reportedly well supplied on their trip.
Neither man received serious injuries during the ordeal.
Hercules no more
Kivalliq/Nunavut
First Air will soon be without the two Hercules aircraft it uses to transport cargo.
One of the aircraft has already been sold, while the company reports it is in advanced talks with a potential buyer for the second.
The company states its Hercules operation simply became too costly to sustain, and will look toward alternative methods of transporting cargo once the two aircraft are sold.
Charity game
Chesterfield Inlet
A charity Toronto vs. Montreal hockey game was held in Chesterfield Inlet this past Sunday, Feb. 8
The game was held in support of the community's effort to partner with Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program, and featured draws for a number of great prizes, including an autographed Shea Weber sweater, a 32-inch TV, an all-around shock recharge and a Co-op mystery prize.
