Guilty pleas in timber and caribou cases
Both Fred Sangris and Ernest Betsina plead guilty in Yellowknife territorial court on Tuesday to charges laid by territorial wildlife officers last year.
Sangris, a former chief of Ndilo, received a $230 fine for cutting timber in the Hay Lake area on Jan. 22, 2014.
Betsina received a $460 fine for shooting a caribou without a tag in the Gordon Lake checkpoint area on Feb. 15, 2014.
Both were represented by attorney James Jodouin.

Another fiery summer possible
Unless precipitation falls consistently over the next three months, the NWT could be in for another hot season.
Janice Zieman, forest officer for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources told a group of around 30 people last week at a meeting about the 2014 fire season that there were 385 fires last year.
"The past two winters ... were the two driest winters in NWT history, " said Zieman

Youth shelter funding announced
The city will announce a funding contribution with SideDoor Youth Ministries to purchase a housing facility for homeless youth.
The proposed 10 to 15 unit building will house youth between the ages of 16 to 24 years who are homeless or at risk of ending up on the streets.
The city is set to receive $2.1 million in federal funding to combat homelessness, $594,000 will be allocated to the youth centre.
The official announcement will be made at city hall at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Travelling memorial honours Afghanistan's fallen
A memorial dedicated to those who gave their lives during the war in Afghanistan is on display in the legislative assembly's Great Hall
The Afghanistan Memorial Vigil consists of 194 granite plaques that were part of the cenotaph at the Kandahar Air Field engraved with the story behind the 158 Canadian soldiers, 43 United States Armed Forces and several civilians who were under Canadian command when they died.
The exhibition is open to the public from today to Friday.

Missing man found
Rankin Inlet/Arviat
A 52-year-old man travelling to Arviat from Rankin Inlet was found safe on the land about 34 km away from Arviat.
Police have not released the man's name.
Arviat RCMP received a call around 9 a.m. on Jan. 22 advising the detachment the man had left for Arviat two days earlier and was believed to be lost.
The Arviat searchandrescue team, with the assistance of a military Hercules aircraft, began searching the area.
The man was spotted Jan. 24, at about 10 a.m. by military personnel on the aircraft.
A helicopter was deployed from Arviat to transport the man, who was suffering from non life-threatening injuries, back to the community.
Return of the cup
Rankin Inlet
Organizers in Rankin Inlet are looking to rejuvenate the Kivalliq Cup oldtimers tournament in Rankin this coming weekend.
The Kivalliq Cup tournament has not been held in the region for a number of years.
As of press time, five teams were expected to participate, including two from the host community.
Cooking off the shelf
Baker Lake
A basic shelf workshop, teaching how to cook a nutritious meal with ingredients that have a long shelf life, will be held in Baker Lake this week, with part one being held today, Feb. 4, or tomorrow, Feb. 5, at the community hall beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Part two will be held on Feb. 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The course is open to any community member who has not taken it previously.
Participants will learn to cook nutritious meals for their family, learn about lowercost ingredients, receive a box of basic ingredients to use at home, and receive their own copy of the Basic Shelf Cookbook.
The workshop is open to adults only, 18 years of age or older, as there will be no childcare service available.
Hockey tourney on horizon
Baker Lake
Baker Lake will host its first major hockey tournament in a number of years when midgetaged players from across Nunavut descend upon the community to compete for the territorial banner this coming month.
The Nunavut territorial midget hockey championship will be held in Baker from Friday, March 20, to Sunday, March 22.
Byelection called
Rankin Inlet
A byelection for one vacant hamlet council seat will be held in Rankin Inlet on March 9.
The seat became vacant when Sam Tutanuak resigned his position.
Voting will take place in the council chambers at the hamlet office from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
An advance poll will be held during the same hours on March 2 at the same location.
School closure criteria released
Kivalliq
With severe cold and blizzard conditions sweeping across the Kivalliq the past two weeks, a number of schools in the region have closed for a day or more.
Parents are advised schools will close when two of the following three conditions are met.
The temperature reaches 50 C or colder with the windchill, the wind is steady (not gusts) at 50 km/h or higher, or visibility drops to less than .2 km.
