Referendum for games up for discussion
City councillor Dan Wong has added a discussion about holding a referendum on the Canada Winter Games to Monday's Municipal Services Committee agenda.
He said he's received a lot of feedback from residents about the possibility of bringing the games and one of those residents suggested the decision go to referendum.
The city is currently deliberating whether to apply to host the games in 2023. The proposed referendum would coincide with the next general election Oct. 19.

City wins energy award
Yellowknife was lauded for its energy initiatives Tuesday night in Vancouver after QUEST Canada announced the city won its Smart Energy Award.
QUEST is a group that works with Canadian communities to create energy conservation initiatives.
Yellowknife won the award based on the quality of local projects and programs that conserve energy, its energy efficiency improvements and collaboration with environmental groups.
Mayor Mark Heyck was in Vancouver to receive the award.

Christmas Lights judging set to begin
The City of Yellowknife is encouraging residents to enter its annual Christmas Lights Competition.
Interested participants are asked to have their properties ready by Sunday and general judging will happen Monday through Wednesday. The city will post the top five entries in each category on the Yellowknife Facebook site Dec. 12 and the general public is invited to vote by "liking" photos or contacting the city.

Special grant applications open
The city is accepting funding applications from not-for-profit organizations for their 2015 projects, events and programs.
To apply, visit the City of Yellowknife website and fill out an application under the Forms and Publications section. Applications close Jan. 12, 2015 and the Grant Review Committee will compile a list of recommended grants for Municipal Services Committee Feb. 16, 2015.

Sexual assault trial delayed
The trial of Donald Archibald Campbell on one count of sexual assault and one count of uttering threats has been rescheduled for the new year.
The case involves a June 13 incident when Campbell allegedly pulled down a woman's shirt and bra while at Tonimoe's Restaurant.
Originally to be heard on Dec. 3 and 4 in Inuvik, Judge Bernadette Schmaltz recused herself due to familiarity with one of the Crown's witnesses. The trial is now tentatively scheduled to begin on March 10.

New Wildlife Act in effect
The new Wildlife Act for the Northwest Territories came into effect Nov. 28.
"(The new legislation) promotes co-operative and collaborative working relationships for effective wildlife management at the local, regional and territorial levels and recognizes aboriginal and treaty rights and the rights contained in land claim and self-government agreements," stated Environment and Natural Resources Minister Michael Miltenberger in a news release.
Drug charges laid
Two men were arrested on Nov. 27 and will be facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, police said.
The arrests came after RCMP investigated a tip that there was "alleged drug trafficking activity at a room in a local hotel," according to an RCMP news release.
Eighty-eight grams of crack cocaine, two cellphones and a quantity of cash were seized after a search warrant was issued. Both men were released on a promise to appear in Inuvik territorial court on March 10.
Christmas lights returned
A would-be Grinch seems to have had a change of heart after an Inuvik man turned to social media when he awoke Dec. 1 to find his Christmas lights stolen.
In the Facebook post, the man promised to call the RCMP to investigate. He was quickly flooded with outraged replies commiserating with him over the theft.
By mid-morning, the lights had reappeared.
Vigil planned
There are plans to mark the National Day of Remembrance for violence against women with a vigil on Dec. 5, between 3 and 5 p.m. at the Aurora Campus.
Participants are asked to meet in the main campus lobby and are requested to bring a candle. Everyone is welcome to attend.
