After working as a pharmacist for five years in Yellowknife, Ian Wasserman branched out on his own two years ago to open the Medicine Shoppe on Old Airport Road near the Brick.

With one pharmacy assistant, Wasserman's pharmacy offers complete pharmaceutical services, like Accu-Pak blister packaging, diabetic products and services, blood pressure monitoring, medication reviews and prescription delivery.
The first two years had been about developing a new clientele while keeping in touch with his old customers, said Wasserman.
"It's been about growth and trying to establish a good name. A reputation in the community," Wasserman said.
The Medicine Shoppe is Wasserman's first business venture. Originally from Muenster, Sask. with a 400-person population, Wasserman's decision to set up shop in Yellowknife followed a trajectory similar to many.
He arrived only expecting to spend a year or so, but has now been in town for seven.
"It's been a lot of work, but with that comes a lot of freedom," he said, referring the self-employed experience.
"You feel closer to the community you are in."
Wasserman will be hosting a two-year anniversary at the store Nov. 22.
