Man captured on video during violent arrest appears in court
A man whose arrest by municipal enforcement officers was captured on video made his first court appearance Tuesday.
Gary Jaeb, 66, was charged Sept. 20 with assaulting a peace officer. Jaeb was pulled over for allegedly not wearing his seat belt and a physical altercation ensued. Jaeb is also charged with failing to wear a seat belt and obstruction for allegedly not providing identification. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 25.

Man wanted on drug and weapons charges arrested
A Yellowknife man wanted on drug and weapons charges has been arrested after a foot chase downtown.
RCMP stated in a news release that Brandon Topilikon, 22, was apprehended Oct. 30 after a "lengthy" foot chase. Const. Elenore Sturko stated the pursuit went in and out of a few downtown businesses before heading toward the Explorer Hotel. Topilikon was wanted on outstanding charges of of trafficking cocaine, assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property and other criminal offences, Sturko stated. Topilikon appeared in court last Friday and again on Monday.

Northwestel ups Internet usage cap
Northwestel announced yesterday it's increasing Internet usage allowances on almost all of its packages with no extra charge. The changes, which will affect both DSL and cable internet packages, increase monthly bandwidth allotments by an average of 40 per cent. Northwestel's lowest package is increasing from five GB to 10 GB and its highest package, Internet 100, is increasing from 250 GB to 300 GB. The changes were put into effect as of Nov. 1.

Indigenous women meet in Yellowknife
Dene Nahjo has organized the first-ever Indigenous Circumpolar Women's Gathering in Yellowknife next week.
From Nov. 12 to 14, workshops, discussions and cultural events will bring together indigenous women leaders and emerging leaders from around the world. The event will be held at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, with keynote speakers including Inuit leader Mary Simon, and Marie Wilson, Truth and Reconciliation commissioner.

Fundraising for full bellies
Coral Harbour/Kanata, Ont.
A group of students in Stittsville, Ont., will host the second annual All That Glam jewelry fundraiser for Nunavut, on Nov. 29 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Richcraft Recreation Complex in Kanata, Ont.
Organized by then Grade 12 student Glen Gawor in 2013, the initial event raised almost $10,000 and was matched by Canadian Pacific.
The money launched a breakfast program at Sakku School in Coral Harbour and funded it for two years.
Books heading north
Arviat/Toronto
TakingItGlobal executive director Jennifer Corriero purchased a number of books on Inuit subject matter from the Toronto-based Inhabit Media to send to kids in Arviat this past week.
Corriero also teamed on a book drive with Grade 5 students at Holy Trinity School in Richmond Hill, Ont., which will soon be bound for Arviat.
New tourism board member named
Baker Lake
Karen Yip of Baker Lake is one of three new regional representatives on Nunavut Tourism's board of executives.
Yip, who is the Kivalliq rep, was joined by the Kitikmeot's Dan Caron and Qikitani's Sarah MacNairLandry to ensure regional representation on the board.
Youth received Indspire award
Arviat
Jordan Konek of Arviat received the 2014 Arctic Indspire Inuit Youth Award this past week.
Currently a radio reporter and editor, Konek worked extensively on the Nanisiniq Arviat History Project, attended a United Nations Conference on Climate Change, and spoke on climate change at the International Polar Year conference in 2011.
Wellknown Inuit elder Peter Irniq took home the Arctic Indspire Culture, Heritage and Spirituality Award for Nunavut Inuit.
