Nominations closed on Nov. 10 for elections in NWT hamlets.
The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) released an initial list of candidates for the elections set for Dec. 8.
According to the information provided by the department, there are four races for mayor - in Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tulita and Ulukhaktok.
Those four hamlets will also all hold elections for councillors, along with Aklavik, Enterprise, Fort Resolution and Tuktoyaktuk.
There were not enough candidates to fill the five available council seats in Tuktoyaktuk, so nominations have been extended to 3 p.m. on Nov. 17.
In some communities, there will also be elections for local district education authorities on Dec. 8.
In most cases, the nomination period has been extended to Nov. 17 because of a shortage of candidates.
In all, MACA announced nine candidates for mayoral positions and 52 candidates vying for seats on hamlet councils.
The races in Tulita and Ulukhaktok seem to be shaping up to be the most interesting contests.
In Tulita, there are three candidates for mayor and 11 for the eight available council seats.
In Ulukhaktok, there are two candidates for mayor and 11 for eight spots on council, along with six candidates for the community's district education authority.
In Sachs Harbour, four candidates were acclaimed to the four available seats on council.
MACA had no information as of Nov. 13 on the candidates in the hamlets of Fort Providence and Fort Liard.
There will be no election this year in the Hamlet of Fort McPherson.
In July, its council was dissolved by the GNWT and a municipal administrator was appointed to run the local government.
