RCMP officer pleads guilty to attempted fraud
A Yellowknife RCMP officer, charged with fraudulently claiming overtime, has pleaded guilty to attempted fraud.
Const. Nathan White entered the plea in Territorial Court on Nov. 7. He had initially pleaded not guilty on Oct. 17. White was charged on Apr. 1 with fraud, forgery and uttering a forged document in relation to more than $3,200 allegedly claimed in overtime between Feb 24, 2012 and Feb, 28, 2013. White appears for sentencing Dec. 17.

Residents told to avoid travelling on ice
RCMP is warning the public about the dangers of venturing out on the ice this time of year.
Cpl. Todd Scaplen, a spokesperson for the RCMP, said despite the recent cold snap there are very likely many spots where the ice is not thick enough to travel on. A message on the city's Facebook page also states people should stay off the ice because it is not yet thick enough. The city posts ice thickness measurements on its website every Monday.

Santa Claus is coming to town
The city has announced that the annual Santa Claus parade will be held Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
In an e-mail, the city states that the theme this year is "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Floats will line up in front of city hall, head up 53 Street, turn left onto Franklin Avenue and then turn down 49 Street and finish at Sir John Franklin High School. Community organizations, businesses and residents that want to enter a float can download the entry form from the city's website. The registration deadline is today at 8 a.m.

Fourth annual city hall food drive underway
City staff as well as the mayor and councillors have begun their fourth annual food drive. An e-mail from the city states that donations are evenly divided between the Yellowknife Food Bank and the Salvation Army. Staff have been assigned to teams and will compete against one another to see who can bring in the most food.

Storm warning in Manitoba
Arviat
Manuel Ukutak of Arviat is part of a strong Nunavut presence on the Manitoba OCN Storm junior B team of the Keystone Junior Hockey League this season.
Ekutak is joined on the OCN squad by Lodie Ipeelie, Mitchell Tilley and Max Shoo of Iqaluit.
Agnico Eagle Mines and Inuit still negotiating
Rankin Inlet
Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (Agnico Eagle) and the Kivalliq Inuit Association are continuing their negotiations in trying to finalize an Inuit Impact Benefits Agreement (IIBA) for the proposed Meliadine gold project on the land near Rankin Inlet.
The two sides are currently attempting to schedule further meetings in the hopes of resolving some, or all, of the remaining issues concerning the IIBA.
Agnico Eagle has asked the federal minister of Northern Development to postpone the request for an arbitrator made on Oct. 24 until Feb. 2, 2015.
Scary times at Tusarvik School
Repulse Bay
Screams of delight echoed through the halls of Tusarvik School in Repulse Bay on Oct. 31 as the school hosted a number of Halloween-related activities.
Students received cupcakes and candy in the morning, followed by a costume parade for prizes, dancing and a haunted house in the afternoon.

Rankin Inlet/Nunavut
Former Rankin Inlet resident Thelma Cheechoo has released her new album, Stay.
The singer-songwriter resided in Rankin Inlet from 2008 to 2012.
Produced by Bill Bell and featuring the work of a number of top-flight musicians, Cheechoo's album is now available for download on iTunes.
Hamlet in the dark
Arviat
The community of Arviat was scheduled for a hamlet-wide power outage this past Saturday, Nov. 8, from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m.
The planned outage was scheduled by the Qulliq Energy Corp. in order to upgrade the community's system.
