Yellowknife RCMP is investigating after a man smashed his way through the front door into a home in broad daylight last weekend with the homeowner inside.
RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko stated in a news release that an unknown, intoxicated man kicked open the front door and entered the home on Gitzel Street.
The man left the residence when he realized the homeowner was present, Sturko stated.
It happened Sunday morning about 8:30 a.m.
The man is described as aboriginal in appearance and wearing a jean jacket.
Hanging Halloween decoration draws emergency response
Emergency crews and RCMP were called to a Kam Lake residence Monday morning after a scary, realistic-looking Halloween decoration fooled at least one member of the public.
Const. Sturko stated in a news release that RCMP received a call from someone reporting a person hanging from a balcony.
First responders attended the scene and found an effigy hanging by a noose, suspended from a hangman's post, Sturko stated.
She stated that the person who hung the decoration said it was displayed for a party.
That person had since voluntarily taken down the display, Sturko stated.
Watch out for trick or treaters
With Halloween being today, RCMP is reminding the public to keep safety in mind.
Const. Sturko said that with snow and ice on the ground now, it's important to drive with caution and watch out for children who are out trick or treating. They could be distracted by Halloween decorations, Sturko said.
RCMP will have extra officers on duty tonight with a focus on traffic enforcement, said Sturko. She also reminds parents to inspect their children's candy before they eat it.
Unwrapped candy or candy in homemade wrapping should only be consumed if people know where it came from, said Sturko.
Parents are also reminded to make sure their children are dressed warmly with mitts and winter boots and ensure they can see properly.
Makeup is better than a mask for visibility, Sturko said.
"I always send my kids out with a glow stick tied to their costume for extra visibility," Sturko said.
