The members of the Art Travel Club at the school, encouraged by teacher liaison Alexandra Winchester, are trying to raise approximately $80,000 to make a pilgrimage to Italy on an art-appreciation tour next spring.

That's going to make the 12 club members a familiar sight around Inuvik over the next few months as they feverishly try to raise the money. The majority of that money needs to be in the bank by January for the tip to go forward, club members said.

It would be the second overseas trip for the club, which travelled to the United Kingdom in 2013 in its first year of operation.

Winchester, the school's art teacher, has guided the club since its beginning in 2012-2013.

She described the club as encouraging "art appreciation and history."

It's open to students in their final year or two of high school.

"We had a bunch of places as options," said club member Karly King Simpson. "And we all voted anonymously for them."

"It took a couple of rounds of voting," added Sarah Seward.

Seward described the club as "as a group of high school students who just really enjoy art and wanted to experience art in different places."

"Rome is a big place for historic art," she added. "We want to learn about it and it's cultural value in the world. I'm looking forward to seeing everything and I'm pretty excited."

On Sept. 20, the club hosted one of its first fundraisers for the trip with a budding artist workshop for public and elementary school-aged youth.

"We've taken 30 kids in for the afternoon," said Simpson. "And we do art projects with them, and have gym time and they get to do a lot of art to basically get them to like art more."

"I think they're enjoying it a lot," said Seward. "They really love the face painting."

"We're going to be doing a few of these," added Seward. "And we're doing 50-50s, we're doing a bottle drive, and we're planning on having a table at the (Christmas) craft fair. We're making stuff for that."

School dances and a merchandise bingo are also on tap.
