Mountie pleads not guilty to charges

A Yellowknife RCMP officer has pleaded not guilty to fraud and forgery charges.

Const. Nathan White entered the pleas in territorial court in Yellowknife Friday, Oct. 17. He was charged April 1 with fraud under $5,000, forgery and uttering a forged document.

According to court documents, RCMP allege White fraudulently claimed more than $3,200 in overtime between February 2012 and February 2013. He was suspended with pay on May 29, 2013, about two months after the Mounties launched an investigation into his actions. White joined the RCMP on Jan. 2. 2007. He has served his entire career within the NWT, first in Tuktoyaktuk and then in Yellowknife. White is scheduled to be back in court Nov. 7.

Casaway makes court appearance

Travis Casaway, a man convicted of two sex assaults against children a decade ago, appeared in court Tuesday morning under conditions of a peace bond. The 27-year-old was put under the bond on Oct. 10, a day after RCMP issued a news release warning the public he had returned to Yellowknife. He had previously been living in Edmonton, Alta., after his release from jail in 2009.

He has not been charged with any new crime. His next scheduled court appearance is Nov. 4.

Dene students head to Ontario

Secondary students from Kalemi Dene School in Ndilo are in Thunder Bay, Ont., this week to attend the Soaring Indigenous Youth Conference. The 19 students from grades nine to 12 are scheduled to take part in traditional Anishinabe activities, attend workshops, and tour Lakehead University. The students left Monday and are scheduled to return tomorrow.

Social networking for jobs

The French business organization Conseil de developpement economique des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CDETNO) is hosting its latest Cafe-emploi networking event today. The event, designed to provide a casual atmosphere in which employers and job-seekers may connect, is scheduled to run from 5 to 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Greenstone building on Franklin Avenue.

Hockey season starts

Rankin Inlet

The minor hockey season has started with a bang in Rankin Inlet, as the community is hosting a sixday camp for players in all categories this week from Oct. 20 to 25.

The camp's on-ice sessions are featuring instruction on skating, puck skills and goaltending, while off-ice instruction is focused on personal growth and office training sessions.

Each player category will host a pizza party to help wrap things up during the camp's final day.

Rankin rec co-ordinator David Clark led the efforts to organize the camp, which is sponsored and supported by the Rankin Rock, Hockey Nunavut, Hockey North, Hamlet of Rankin Inlet and the Nunavut Literacy Council (Ilitaqsiniq).

Clark also announced the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League will begin regularseason play on Oct. 26.

Hunter drowns

Rankin Inlet

The community of Rankin Inlet is mourning the death of a well-liked young man in the community following an accident on the land this past weekend.

Kook Aliyak, of Rankin Inlet, 27, was out on the land with three fellow hunters on Oct. 18.

Sgt. Yvonne Niego said the RCMP were notified an accident had occurred at about 4:35 p.m.

She said search-and-rescue became involved from that point, followed by the coroner's office.

"Two of the hunters were on one ATV when they submerged in the middle of a lake," said Niego. "One hunter survived with mild hypothermia, while a 27-year-old male succumbed to the situation."

A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Catholic church.

Baker to host the shuttles

Baker Lake

The community of Baker Lake is hosting a Kivalliq regional badminton tournament this coming weekend from Oct. 24 to 26.

Play will be featured in male and female divisions of U14, U16, U-19 and Open adult. The tournament is being supported by the Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association and the Nunavut Badminton Association.

A happy ending

Repulse Bay

Two hunters were returned to Repulse Bay safe and sound by local searchandrescue volunteers this past week.

John Ell and Louis Amagoalik were reported overdue from a hunting trip on Oct. 14.

Local searchers found the two men walking back to town on Oct. 15. Both men were in good health.

Free concert for kids

Baker Lake

Popular entertainer Aaron Burnett and his wife, Kim, performed a free concert for students of Rachel Arngnammaktiq Elementary School in Baker Lake Oct. 16, as well as an open show for the community the same evening.

Burnett is a Juno-nominated children's entertainer with 20 years experience as an school teacher. He has released four CDs and has a vast repertoire of musical styles. Burnett's appearance was sponsored by the hamlet and Calm Air.
