Leonie Sammurtok, 14, said she and her parents learned of the pageant online.

The Grade 9 student at Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik said she's looking forward to her week in Toronto, especially the training in modelling, makeup and hair styling.

"The pageant isn't all about looks, though, but who you are," said Sammurtok.

"I'm looking forward to meeting girls my own age from across the country who have the same interests I do.

"Even though we'll be competing, I'm really looking forward to making new friends there."

Sammurtok has to raise $3,000 in sponsorships, or pledges, before the pageant, and put in a number of hours as a community volunteer.

In addition to the training they will receive during the week, participants will also get to make appearances at main attractions such as Canada's Wonderland and The Korean BBQ in downtown Toronto.

The pageant, itself, consists of segments on evening gown and swimsuit walks, a pool party, question and answer, talent, photo shoot and national costume.

The contestants are judged on who they are as a person, with the winner and runnerup being promised to appear in international pageants in Florida, Albania and the Dominican Republic.

Also up for grabs are the People's Choice Award (most votes online), Talent Award (decided by judges), Audience Choice (most audience votes on day of event), Ambassador (delegate who raises the most funds) and National Costume (costume displaying the most original representation).

Sammurtok said she also has to hold a charity event in Rankin before the pageant.

She likes the idea of having to benefit the community before she can travel to Toronto.

"I get to pick where I do my volunteer hours and for what charity I raise money for. I want to help the RCMP Christmas Hamper Drive as my charity project. The pageant appeals to me because it's an opportunity for me to try new things.

"It's still almost a year away, but I'm excited about getting everything done and doing some good for my community as I get ready for the pageant."
