Police warn of vehicle thefts
The RCMP is warning residents of to take caution after a string of vehicle-related thefts throughout the summer months.
Between July and September, nine vehicles thefts occurred and 50 reports of mischief to vehicles were reported. The RCMP also saw 21 thefts from vehicles over that three-month period, noting that in some instances vehicles had been left unlocked, with keys inside. As a result, residents are urged to lock vehicles and not leave the keys inside, park in well-lit areas and refrain from leaving valuables exposed inside vehicles.

Diamond raffle coming
The Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation, in partnership with DeBeers and First Air, is selling tickets to win a 1.01 carat Snap Lake princess cut diamond.
The diamond comes with $1,000 toward a setting for an estimated total prize value of $12,000. The raffle, called "Wonders of the World," will raise money for two new vital monitors for the hospital's emergency department. Second prize is a five-night trip for two to London, England and third prize is a trip for two to see Virginia Falls in Nahanni National Park.

School board hosts self-regulation presention
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 is hosting a presentation for parents and teachers showing a different approach to managing behavioural problems in children.
The presentation, called "Calm Alert and Learning: A Practical Guide to Self-Regulation in Homes and Classrooms" will highlight the strategies of York University research professor Dr. Stuart Shanker's approach to teaching kids how to self-regulate their behaviour by learning to avoid distraction and pay attention to classroom activities.
It will be hosted by Christine Robinson, an occupational therapist who specializes in early intervention and school-based practice. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly.

Budget talks begin
A meeting will take place in Fort Simpson next month as part of the territorial government's 2014 budget dialogue.
The exercise is designed to update the public on the government's fiscal outlooks and gather information from residents on their views of the government's financial management and fiscal strategy. This year's discussion is expected to focus on the continued need for fiscal restraint and to discuss the transition to the 18th legislative assembly.
Last year's dialogue was centered on the government's approach to managing resource revenues.
The meeting in Fort Simpson will take place Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nahanni Inn boardroom.
New chief for Jean Marie River
Jean Marie River First Nation is gaining a new chief through acclamation.
Gladys Norwegian was the only candidate to put her name forward during the nomination period for chief. Norwegian will have a three-year term, replacing Stan Sanguez who was acclaimed to the position in 2011.
The First Nation is also having an election for six councillors. The nomination period will last from Oct. 23 to 28 with the election taking place on Nov. 3.
Workers wear pink for a cause
A number of offices and businesses in Fort Simpson will be staffed by people wearing pink on Oct. 24.
Seven locations in the village are participating in Dress for the Cause, a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. For one day, people are encouraged to wear pink to work and raise money for breast cancer research either through pledges or through activities like bake sales.
The organizations participating in the village include Dehcho First Nations, Liidlii Kue First Nation, CIBC, Unity, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment and the Dehcho Health and Social Services Authority.
Have your say on tourism
Members of the tourism industry will have an opportunity to have their say on a new plan to guide GNWT activities and investments into tourism over the next five years.
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment will be holding a meeting to discuss what it's calling Tourism 2020 in Fort Simpson on Oct. 21 as part of a series of six regional meetings. The new document follows on the heels of Tourism 2015.
Feedback can also be shared through an online survey or by contacting a regional tourism officer.
Vehicle set on fire
RCMP and the fire marshal's office are investigating after someone tried to set three vehicles on fire.
On Oct. 9 at 8 a.m., police and a bylaw officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle fire in the parking lot of an apartment on Tununuk Place.
An attempt was made to light a second vehicle on fire at that building and a third incident was found at the nearby Nihjaa apartments. Both the latter attempts were unsuccessful, Const. Elenore Sturko stated in a news release.
Man dead near Gwich'in Park
RCMP aren't releasing many details about a man found near Gwich'in Park on Oct. 9.
“The cause of death is under investigation, however, there is no evidence at this time to suggest a concern for public safety. No further information will be released at this time,” stated Const. Elenore Sturko in a news release.
Emergency Services personnel responded to a call about a man seen near the Dempster Highway in the vicinity of the park at around 10 a.m. The RCMP were the first on scene, followed by an ambulance.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to the Inuvik hospital suffering from acute frostbite and hypothermia. He was pronounced dead at around 3 p.m. despite lifesaving efforts.
Reduce waste for week
Ecology North is sponsoring a Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 17 to 25.
Events are planned for Inuvik, as well as Hay River and Yellowknife.
One of the goals is to “encourage residents to think about how they can reduce the amount of waste that they produce,” the organization stated in a news release.
On Oct. 25, a screening of the documentary dealing with food wastage in North America titled Just Eat It will be held in Inuvik.
Volleyball tourney this weekend
The second annual Paulou Ittungna Memorial Tournament is being held this weekend at East Three Secondary School.
Formerly called the Beaufort Delta Regional Volleyball Tournament, the tournament has been named after former student Paulou Ittungna, who passed away in 2012.
Volleyball was one of his passions and organizers are seeking adult and school teams to enter the tournament. Volleyball is one of the most popular winter sports in Inuvik, with a recreational league playing weekly.
