Family violence takes spotlight

Events are being held in two Deh Cho communities to mark Family Violence Awareness Week.

There will be a take back the night march in Fort Simpson on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. starting at Thomas Simpson School and ending at the recreation centre for refreshments. On Oct. 10, there will be an elders' afternoon tea at long-term care from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and the following day the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) video, Smash, will be screened at the Liidlii Kue First Nation's boardroom at 7 p.m.

In Fort Liard, following a march against family violence and a reception and potluck held earlier in the week, there will be a talking circle on violence at the library at 7 p.m. while the children's movie, Frozen, is shown at the community hall.

Fire prevention for safety

In recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, NWT residents are being invited to fill out a questionnaire that is designed to check if their homes have adequate fire safety measures.

The home fire safety checklist is available on the Department of Municipal and Community Affair's website. Residents with children in grades seven and under who complete the checklist will be entered in a prize draw for a home fire safety kit. One prize will be awarded for each region of the territory.

The checklist will help evaluate current smoke detectors and find areas were preparedness should be improved. National Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct. 5 to 11.

Two artists take Fort Simpson stage

Fort Simpson is the first of three tour stops in the NWT for two Canadian songwriters.

Mary Caroline and Megan Nash are taking the Lies and Lampshades tour across central Canada from Saskatchewan to the NWT. The two artists will be performing at the OSC Gallery in Fort Simpson on Oct. 23 before moving on to Hay River and Yellowknife.

The tour is supporting Mary Caroline's new single, Such a Liar, which will be the lead single on her debut studio album that will be released in January. Megan Nash spent the summer writing and recording in the small hamlet of Palmer, Sask. where she penned the song Lampshade.

Support for the arts

The Open Sky Creative Society will be holding its annual general meeting on Oct. 22 at the OSC Gallery.

The society is looking for additional board members and any volunteers who are interested in supporting arts and culture in the Deh Cho.

Youth charged after chase

An Inuvik youth has been charged with multiple offences following a short police chase Oct. 2.

According to a news release from Inuvik RCMP, officers responded to a report of a possible impaired driver, and theft of a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to pull it over. The driver did not initially stop for police. Several blocks later, the driver pulled over and was arrested.

The youth is facing numerous charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, refusal to provide a breath sample, driving while disqualified, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, theft of vehicle and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Fire prevention sweeps territory

If you see the Inuvik Fire Department being more active than normal around town this week, don't be too alarmed.

The GNWT is celebrating National Fire Prevention Safety Week by encouraging NWT residents to check their homes to ensure adequate fire safety measures are in place. Residents with children in grades seven and under who participate by filling out a Home Fire Safety Checklist will be entered in a prize draw.

"Fire Prevention Week is a great time for everyone to consider how they are prepared for a fire," stated Robert C. McLeod, minister of Municipal and Community Affairs.

Family Violence Awareness Week

Various agencies in Inuvik will hold events to mark Family Violence Awareness Week on Oct. 10.

The Inuvik Youth Centre is holding a Super Duper Family Fun Night from 6:30 until 9 p.m.

The Children's First Centre is also holding events, as is the Aurora Campus and Inuvik Youth and Family Support, although details weren't immediately available.

Storm causes few problems

An early October snowstorm didn't cause much in the way of problems for Inuvik residents.

The snow began late in the afternoon of Oct. 6 and by Oct. 7, the ground was covered with a thin layer of snow and ice. Larger drifts were accumulating in the high winds.

Environment Canada had issued a snowfall warning that as much as 30 to 40 cm of snow could fall, but that seemed unlikely by Tuesday afternoon.

Deb Maguire, the principal at East Three school, posted a notice early in the morning of Oct. 7 saying the school was open for regular classes.

Other parts of the Delta region seemed to be hit harder, with Aklavik receiving nearly 30 cm of snow.
