A 14-year-old girl in Rankin Inlet had to be medevaced to Winnipeg after being struck by an ATV on Williamson Lake earlier this month.

On April 29, the teenager was still being treated in Winnipeg for head injuries sustained in the incident.

Johnson Krako, 23, faces charges of dangerous driving causing injury and leaving the scene of an accident, as well as one charge of breach of probation.

RCMP Sgt. Kim Melenchuk said the girl was flipped by the ATV and struck her head on the ice.

He said there were a number of people who witnessed the accident, and spoke to the driver of the ATV before he fled the scene.

"The ATV did stop following the accident, and there was a conversation that took place between the driver and the witnesses," said Melenchuk.

"Then, for whatever reason, he took off.

"It is an alcohol-involved case."

Krako is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Rankin Inlet on June 16.

The name of the victim was not released by the RCMP because her mother and father were still in Winnipeg with her and could not be reached for permission.
