It was the fourth time in the past five years Kivalliq News was named No. 1 in its class by the MCNA.

Editor Darrell Greer wrote the best editorial on a business topic for the second year in a row for his Aug. 7, 2013, work, "Throwing some light on Nutrition North."

Greer scored 49 out of 50 on the judges' score cards for the piece.

In commenting on the editorial, the judges said, "The writer was very articulate, explaining in detail the issues.

"It had a great introduction and conclusion, as well, and tied all the pieces together in a neat package."

The Kivalliq News also earned the MCNA's best editorial page, and best layout and design awards.

The paper took home second place for best front page, and third in the category of best agriculture story.

Greer was "blown away" by the MCNA results, and proud of the strong showing by Kivalliq News.

He said Manitoba has many, many top-notch community newspapers, making the annual awards a tough competition.

"It's always nice to be recognized by your peers, especially when some of the judges are among the top community newspaper editors in the region," said Greer.

"I try to produce a weekly newspaper that not only our region can, hopefully, take pride in, but one the Kivalliq deserves.

"I'm in my 16th year here and the Kivalliq, long ago, became home in my heart, not just my mailing address.

"I find our region the most fascinating in Nunavut and look forward to coming to work every day."

Greer, who turns 56 this week, appreciates the hard work his company's photography, editorial and production crews contribute every year in support of the Kivalliq News.

He said behind every publication viewed favourably by its peers can be found a solid team effort.

"I've been working full time or in post-secondary education since joining the army at the age of 17, and don't know how much more is left in the tank," said Greer with a laugh.

"But, being editor of Kivalliq News has come to mean a great deal to me and, I hope, there's still more than a few years ahead of me.

"There's no shortage of stories when it comes to the people of the Kivalliq.

"And I'm grateful to so many Kivalliqmiut for allowing me to tell theirs."
