Missing inmate to be sentenced
A 48-year-old man arrested May 2 for being at large is scheduled to be sentenced today.
The man was serving a sentence at Yellowknife's jail and was out on an unescorted temporary absence when he failed to check in. It's alleged he was at large between April 25 and May 2.
Grant James Reeves appeared in territorial court last Wednesday in relation to the charge. The offence carries a maximum sentence of two years less a day if the Crown proceeds by indictment.

Mackenzie River breaking up
Spring break-up has officially made it to the Mackenzie River basin.
The ice on the Mackenzie River at Fort Providence moved for the first time last Friday night, between 9:30 and 10 p.m., according to Linda Croft, general manager at the Snowshoe Inn.
Then, the river stayed relatively quiet through the weekend, but as of noon yesterday, the river was flowing, making crunching and booming noises as it pushed pans of ice off the lake down river, said Croft.

Malliki earned 84 votes in the byelection, compared to 68 for Marcel Mapsalak and 16 for Johnny Tongilik.
