Free parking
With the holiday season upon us, the city will be offering Yellowknifers a break, by providing an amnesty on parking meters in the downtown core. From Dec. 20 until Jan. 1, 2014 residents will not be required to pay for parking in the central business district. Anyone working downtown, or parking for extended periods of time, are encouraged not to park adjacent to storefronts. Fire lanes, handicap stalls, and loading zones, as well as all other parking regulations will be enforced, including parking restrictions on Franklin Avenue between Monday and Friday, from 3 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.

Lighting up the city
Today is the last day for submissions to the City of Yellowknife's annual Christmas Lights Competition. To enter a display into the contest, residents are asked to submit a photo of the light display, including the street address, to the city's events co-ordinator. A judging committee will select the top three to five entrants for best residential exterior, commercial exterior, commercial interior, and alternative display, where non-electrical light sources are used. The general public can have their say from Dec. 13 to 16 by voting for their favourites on Facebook.

Yk MLA calls for tax elimination
Robert Hawkins, MLA for Yellowknife Centre, lashed back at Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington's report on living costs in the NWT yesterday.
In a press release, Hawkins stated he's "deeply disappointed" with Bevington's conclusions, including a remark about changing the federal tax system.
"Mr. Bevington ought to understand that the working poor need money in their pockets immediately. Waiting for a tax return does not help families living cheque to cheque."
Hawkins suggested eliminating federal taxes for those who earn less than $35,000 per year.
