Jubilee medal

Ups and downs
Baker Lake
It was a case of good news, bad news for Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) this past summer.
According to AEM's third-quarter results issued earlier this month, gold production was up for the company, but profits were down.
AEM saw its net income come in at less than half of what it was during the same time period in 2012 (July-September).
The drop to $47 million during the third quarter is being attributed to falling metal prices. AEM's bottom line was aided by the fact the company set a record high for production during the past quarter, with the Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake more than pulling its share to help establish the record.
The company also announced it has increased its production forecast for the year.
Fighting censorship
Nunavut
Former Government of Nunavut minister Manitok Thompson of Rankin Inlet, who currently lives in Alberta, has taken up issue with an Elections Nunavut rule that people who live outside of Nunavut cannot express opinions or support territorial candidates using social media.
The rule was among changes made to the Election Act earlier this year.
Thompson views the rule as censorship based on residency and has taken her complaint to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
The liberties association appears to be agreeing with Thompson's position by asking Nunavut's chief electoral officer to reconsider the position.
Elections Nunavut is reportedly consulting with its lawyer before reaching any decision or releasing any further information on the complaint.
