A man released from the North Slave Correctional Centre on Thursday was arrested Friday evening after a woman reported being threatened near the Gallery of the Midnight Sun in Old Town.
The arrest came after RCMP responded to a call at 6:20 p.m. from the victim. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Barry Ledoux told News/North that the man in question was walking behind the woman uttering threats.
There was a weapon involved, but Ledoux would not release further details because the incident remains under investigation.
The man was released from the North Slave Correctional Centre on Thursday after serving five months in the facility for assault with a weapon for an incident that took place in Nunavut. Ledoux could not confirm that the man was from Nunavut and could not say why he was on the streets.
"I don't know what he was doing here," he said.
The man is facing charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats, resisting arrest and four counts of breach of probation.
As of Saturday, charges had not been formally laid and the identity of the assailant was not released. The suspect remains in custody.
An employee at the art gallery, who wished to remain anonymous, said she and the other workers had left together when the gallery closed at 6 p.m. and didn't see anything.
"Honestly I wasn't aware that there was an assault," the employee said.
Yellowknife RCMP continue to investigate.
