RCMP officer charged with assault Charges stem from handling of prisoner at courthouse

RCMP Const. Cory Wallace has been charged with one count of assault after a prisoner he was escorting was injured last spring.
Wallace was charged on Monday and is set to appear in territorial court in Yellowknife on Sept. 17.
Yellowknife RCMP stated in a news release Wednesday that officers were escorting a male prisoner from the Yellowknife courthouse cells on March 14, 2013. The prisoner was injured in the process.
RCMP Major Crimes Unit began an investigation as a result of the incident the next day. Evidence was forwarded to Crown prosecutors, who decided there was enough evidence to lay charges against one of the officers in relation to how he handled the prisoner.
Wallace has been on administrative duties in Yellowknife since the investigation began, meaning all of his duties are to be conducted strictly in an office setting. Wallace will remain on administrative duties until the matter is resolved.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Barry Ledoux said because this matter is now before the courts, he's not able to offer any further comment.
