City parks crews discovered deep tire ruts in the newly-reseeded lawn of the park at 5 a.m. Wednesday, said facilities manager Dave Hurley.

"Basically, what happened is some bunch of idiots went for a joyride," he said. "The most frustrating part about this one is we were in the process of upgrading the park."

As a result, workers were pulled off of other jobs Wednesday to fix the damage and put boulders around the perimeter of the park to prevent the same thing from happening again, said Hurley.

The area will now have to be reseeded to cover the tire tracks left behind.

Not only did the act of vandalism cost the city money, time and the use of equipment, it could have affected residents wanting to use the site, he said, pointing to a wedding that had been held in the park about two weeks ago.

"People should realize that it not only affects the city, it affects other people. If this had been two weeks ago, it would have ruined that woman's wedding," he said.

Anyone who saw any suspicious activity near the park late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning is asked to contact the city.
