Seven Yellowknifers were in Territorial Court Tuesday to face allegations over illegal fishing practices.

The incidents occurred over a 10-day period, from May 21 to 31. Fisheries officers caught six people fishing without licences, including two who were fishing with barbed hooks, as well as one man who was caught fishing illegally in Baker Creek, which is closed to fishing from April 15 to June 15.

Judge Garth Malakoe fined those fishing without licences $150 and $250 each. A fine of $400 was charged to the man fishing in Baker Creek, while the two who fished with barbed hooks were fined $75 each for that offence.

Most of the individuals were caught by fisheries officers patrolling along the highway in places such as Jackfish Lake, the Yellowknife River and Frank Channel.

Malakoe handed out $1,850 in fines to the seven offenders, warning them to read the regulations and pay attention to signage.
