"Both female drivers were sent to hospital and have since been released," RCMP Cpl. Barry Ledoux stated in a news release. "The investigation revealed alcohol was a contributing factor."

Witnesses to the crash said it didn't appear the driver of a late-model Jeep tried to slow down before smashing into the back of a Chevrolet Equinox belonging to the Northern REIT company. The driver of that vehicle was placed on a backboard and taken for medical treatment.

The entire hatchback area of the Equinox was destroyed.

An Inuvik resident was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle causing bodily harm while impaired by alcohol. She is also facing an additional four charges, including dangerous driving. The accused was released on bail and is to appear before a judge on Aug. 20 in Inuvik territorial court.
