Ski Club Snow Show
It's an opportunity to get snow gear for the winter months.
The Yellowknife Ski Club is holding its annual Snow Show on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Snow Show will include a silent auction, ski waxing and a ski swap for those wishing to buy or sell used equipment. Anyone wanting to participate in the ski swap should bring their equipment to the club on Friday night between 7 and 9 p.m.

Metis and BHP seek scholarship applicants
The North Slave Metis Alliance (NSMA) and BHP Billiton are accepting scholarship applications for the 2011/12 academic year.
The scholarship is to support NSMA beneficiaries enrolled in full-time studies. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited or recognized post-secondary institution or a technical institution. Those who are interested in applying can call the NSMA for information. The application deadline is Nov. 14.

We remember
Yellowknifers will remember Canadian veterans of all wars Nov. 10 and 11.
Beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 10, there will be a Candlelight Vigil at the Field of Honour Cemetery.
Remembrance Day events on Nov. 11 begins with a parade at 9:45 a.m. The parade route will follow Franklin Avenue to 53 Street before turning onto Veteran's Memorial Drive and stopping at the Cenotaph for a wreath laying ceremony. The route will continue along Veteran's Memorial Drive before following 48 Street to St. Patrick High School where services will be held beginning at 10:55 a.m. There will be a moment of silence at 11 a.m. Following the services, the public is welcome to attend a potluck lunch at the Royal Canadian Legion. Potluck items can be dropped off at the Legion any time after 11 a.m.

Community Living hosts AGM
The Yellowknife Association for Community Living will hold its annual general meeting on Thursday, Nov. 3.
The non-profit organization works to help those living with mental disabilities and their families through workshops, training programs and other services. Any interested members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. in the Abe Miller Building.

Australians visit
Arviat - A group of eight Australian tourists were impressed by what they saw during a visit to Arviat this past week.
The group took part in a number of traditional and cultural performances, sampled Inuit cuisine and were treated to a Halloween performance at John Arnalukjuak High School when a flight cancellation forced them to overnight in the community.

Fuel prices drop
Nunavut - Community and Government Services (CGS) Minister Lorne Kusugak made a good news announcement in Iqaluit this past week.
Beginning yesterday, Nov. 1, the price of gasoline dropped by 10 cents per litre, while home-heating fuel went down by five cents per litre.
Not all the news was good however. Kusugak said the cost of Jet A1 fuel will increase by 10 cents per litre. A CGS press release stated the increase in Jet A1 fuel will correspond with the average price of Jet A1 fuel sold in southern Canada.
Adopting a shore
Repulse Bay - Tusarvik School in Repulse Bay was among schools from across the nation to take part in the 17th annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup this past month.
The Grade 4 and Grade 6 students at Tusarvik adopted the shoreline near the school for the event.
The cleanup fit in well with the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit focus for the month of October, which was environmental stewardship.
The students learned the impact of shoreline litter on the environment during the project.
Record crowd
Arviat - Record crowds came out to see students perform a special Halloween production at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat this past week.
The performance was highlighted by a showstopping rendition of Michael Jackson's Thriller routine which left the audience screaming for more.

Adding Inuktitut
Kivalliq - Canadian North airline now has an Inuktitut website.
Passengers can now access all the same information in Inuktitut the airline has on its English language site.
Dropping the puck
Rankin Inlet - Hockey fans in Rankin Inlet are revving up for another season of fastpaced action.
The four team Rankin senior men's recreational league starts play for the 201112 season this coming Sunday, Nov. 6, with two games. Play begins at 5 p.m. with Nuna taking on M&T, followed by AgnicoEagle vs. Kativik an 6:45 p.m.
Commission visits
Baker Lake - Kivalliq residents are reminded the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is scheduled to hold a hearing in Baker Lake on Nov. 15 to hear from former residential school students and their families.
Commissioner Marie Wilson is slated to be present for the hearing.
Always time for grads
Chesterfield Inlet - It's always better late than never to celebrate the accomplishments of youth in the Kivalliq region.
The community of Chesterfield Inlet had two Grade 12 graduates for the 2010-2011 school year.
Earning their Grade 12 diplomas in Victor Sammurtok School's Class of 2011 are Brandon and Valerie Ipkarnerk.

Trade show
Rankin Inlet - The Kivalliq Trade Show (Focus on the Future) will begin this coming Monday, Nov. 7, and run until Nov. 10 in Rankin Inlet
