Softball season over for another year Nicole Veerman Northern News Services Published Wednesday, August 24, 2011
With four teams in the Rankin Inlet Co-ed Softball League, there was a lot of great baseball taking place this year. Damian MacInnis, vice-president of the league, said the quality of play is fantastic. "It's not like the beer-drinking teams you usually see down south," he said. "They take it pretty serious here. It's a fun league, but when it comes down to the crunch it's always down to the bitter end." Raymond Mercer, captain of the M&T Enterprises team, said his team doesn't try to be too competitive. They're there for the fun of socializing and being part of a team. "For our team, we try not to be too serious, but we do go out and try our hardest and we try to have fun. "Win or lose, we're there for a good time." And a good time it's been this year. There were four teams in the league: Inukshuk Cons, Sam's Strike Force, M&T Enterprises and Titans. In the regular season, the Inukshuk Cons came out on top with a 13-1 season. And then they went on to win their semi-final series against the Titans, whose regular season record was 3-11. M&T Enterprises was the other team to make it to the finals after facing off with the league's second place team in the regular season, Sam's Strike Force, who had an 11-3 record. During the regular season, M&T fell even in wins and losses with a record of 7-7. In the best-of-five series between M&T and the Cons, it went to game five Monday night. The results of the game will be in next week's Kivalliq News after press time. In the series, M&T won the first two games back to back. The Cons answered back in the third and fourth games to tie up the series. MacInnis tipped his hat to Lee Kreelak for the Con's comeback. Kreelak had two homeruns in game three and one in game four. "He stepped up to the plate, literally."
